BMS and motordrive on same Cerbo VE.Can port in Venus 3.70?

Now the motordrive data has finally made it into the 3.70 release (hoorah!), looking at the options it’s not clear whether this can share the VE.Can port with a BMS.

I currently have a REC-BMS running at 500kbps plugged into the VE.Can port (nothing on the BMS.Can port), the profile is set to CAN-bus BMS LV (see picture).

It seems there is an option to combine VE.Can and CANopen E-drive so long as they both run at 250kbps (next one up in the list). Does this mean that if I set the BMS rate to 250kbps it can share the port with the CANopen motordrive?

If so that would be great, it would avoid having to run another CAN cable through the bulkhead to the Cerbo which is awkward (restricted access).

If not then I’ll have to switch the BMS to the BMS-Can port and use the VE.Can port for the motordrive, which needs the extra cable.

Hi @iand ,

Unfortunately CANopen and CAN-bus BMS protocols are overlapping and could cause conflicts in some conditions.
In your case it may not be an issue, but it cannot be an option that’s offered by default.
Hence why the list doesn’t have the option to have both enabled at the same time.

Thanks Nils – not what I was hoping for, but finally a definitive answer… :frowning:

So I’ll have to move the REC-BMS from the VE.Can port (29b) on the Cerbo to the BMS.Can port (11b – but I believe this should work fine?) and run another cable from the Sevcon controller to the Cerbo VE.Can port.

Yes this will work.
REC-BMS to BMS-Can port.
Sevcon controller to VE.Can port.
