Android version November 2024 bluetooth connection to new Cerbo GX

Hello from Taumako. I am supporting a solar installation in the Solomon Islands Taumako which is being used to power Starlink and provide the only communication this island has. We puchased a Cerbo GX to monitor the system from afar and are having bluetooth problems.

  1. first we paired with the system menu by mistake and then removed the pairing from the system menu.
  2. we rebooted the phone
  3. we powered off and on the Cerbo GX
  4. we progressed through the Victron connect pairing with the proper PIN on the Cerbo GX label.
  5. got all the way done and got the following message attached.

We went through all the troubleshooting and there is nothing listed for this message. Note it says reboot the phone and we already did that.
There is an existing bluetooth pairing from this phone to a MPPT 100/30 and it is working fine, you can see it in the screenshot under the popup window.

I have the same problem. I updated the Cerbo. I updated the phone app. This is a new Cerbo. I used to be able to unplug the cerbo for 30 seconds, tell the phone to forget the connection, and then when I plug the cerbo back in I was able to get a connection.

I spent hours sitting in front of that blue box. Definitely not the quality I expect from Victron.

You can’t even connect to a hidden wifi network. You have to enable SSID broadcast which is a security issue.

How safe are these things? I can only think of some hacker parking next to me and breaking into this and causing an overload of some sort on the inverter and then a fire.

I was finally able to get a connection. I connected to the wifi network listed on the unit. That seems to be the only way. I did this from a windows machine.

What you need to do is connect to the wifi network from your computer. Then open the Victron Connect App. Then you will see a remote configure button. That will pull up a webpage.

The bluetooth connection seems to be a real pain. I have spent hours with it and it hardly ever works.

A WiFi network without SSID is just as insecure as one with a SSID.
if i do a network scan here from a Linux machine i can see all the networks, including the ones without a name  The most secure home network these days uses WPA3, are you using that?

Security trough obscurity…

You do not need to use the victron app to connect to the bluetooth of the GX device, a direct connection setup from the phone menu also works before using VictronConnect.

Would be nice if it actually worked as expected.

Must just be me and the other person who posted on here that are having connecting issues.

I recently had the same issue, but i am IT certified  Bluetooth has always been a pain in the backside to implement since introduction of the technology. A wired connection is always the best and most secure !
Bluetooth can be hacked as well you know

Most of this is pretty good but if you can’t get a connection to it then it doesn’t matter how good your software is. No one will ever see it.
