3-Phase ESS Help - System Prioritizes Grid Over Solar & Battery (Zero Export Setup)

Hello Victron Community,

I am looking for help troubleshooting a 3-phase ESS installation that is not behaving as expected, despite my having configured the ESS Assistant on all three MultiPlus-II units.

System Hardware:

  • 3x MultiPlus-II (3-phase configuration)

  • 2x Pylontech US5000 batteries

  • 1x SmartSolar MPPT 250/85

  • 15x 410W solar panels

  • Cerbo GX (running the latest firmware)

Desired Behavior: My goal is a standard self-consumption system with zero grid feed-in. The logic should be:

  1. Power loads from Solar.

  2. If solar is insufficient, power loads from the Battery.

  3. Use the Grid only when the battery reaches its minimum SOC.

  4. The battery should never charge from the AC input.

The Problem: The system is currently doing the opposite of my goal. It constantly prioritizes the grid to power loads and also charges the batteries from the grid. This happens even when the batteries are at a high state of charge (e.g., 80% SOC, with Minimum SOC set to 20%). The system essentially ignores the available battery and defaults to the grid.

Configuration Details & Checks Performed: I am confident that the ESS Assistant has been successfully loaded onto all three MultiPlus-II units using VE.Configure. Here are the key settings I have configured:

  • Grid setpoint is set to 0W

  • Mode is set to “Optimized (with BatteryLife)”.

  • Grid feed-in is disabled (limit set to 0W).

Despite these settings, the system continues to draw from the grid. It feels like a setting somewhere is overriding the entire ESS logic, forcing it into a simple UPS/passthrough mode.

My Question: Given that the ESS assistant is installed and configured with the above settings, what could be causing this persistent grid priority? Is there a known bug, a conflicting setting on the MultiPlus-II (outside of the assistant), or a specific parameter in the Cerbo GX that I might have overlooked which would force this behavior?

What screenshots from VE.Configure or the Cerbo GX would be most helpful for you to diagnose this issue?

Thank you for your expertise.

Hi

do you have a grid meter?

Where are your loads connected?

Are you not allowed to feed back to grid?

With ESS it will always balance on grid so always 0w is not possible, did you try the standard setpoint? (50w)

Try Optimized (without BatteryLife), does that make a difference?

Hi,

How did you setup the grid meter ?

If you selected, external meter and you dont have one, your system behavour is “normal” (as it works actually). If you dont have external meter you need to select grid metering Inverter/Charger.

Patrick.
