Venus 3.50 - how to disable VRM remote console?

in this new GUI v3.50 I can’t find the possibility to disable the remote console so that it is no longer available in VRM. Where is it?

In the VRM section of the GX, top item “VRM” can be set to full, read-only or off.

Thanks @nickdb

I just noticed that since I switched the VRM item to OFF, I no longer have any updates on VRM.
This was not my request, I just want to remove the possibility of using the console from the VRM, that’s all.

Have you tried “read only”?

Yes
befor was here in SETTINGS

Sorry, not currently possible. But you’re in the right category for attention.

Too bad because in terms of security it was good

Like many things, because it isn’t there now, doesn’t mean it will never be there.
Hopefully this one will also make it onto the list.

Hi @maa,

As you have found the remote console control via VRM is a bit different with the new UI.

In the classic remote console there was no distinction between reading and writing, so disabling the remote console disabled both.

In the New UI there is a difference between reading and writing. This is much better from a security perspective, and also because you can get the benefit of looking at all the additional information that’s in the remote console without any risk of changing anything accidentally (if set to read only mode).

This has changed the VRM settings screen in VRM;

Here are the consequences of changing setting on VRM;

Thanks @guystewart for your feedback
I have indeed seen this difference and from my point of view I don’t want the console to be accessible even in read-only mode from VRM because only its local access corresponds to my needs. Do you think it is possible to add this option in the near future as it was the case before?

I would need to understand more about your reasons for objection in having it even when it’s just read only.

The new UI works quite differently to the classic version, it’s not just a new coat of paint.

The Classic UI uses a VNC style remote control to tunnel in. While this is done in a secure way, it is inherently a ‘full access condition’ as if you were standing in front of the screen.

The New UI behind the scenes now only passes messages, through a similar channel as the ‘realtime’ dashboard.

What is your issue with having the read only information available?

oh I don’t have any particular problem, besides if I’m the only one asking this don’t take it into account.
But the fact of not checking the “Enable on VRM” box reassures me, it’s certainly stupid

Ok, then let’s wait and see if there is more demand before I try to escalate it further.

IMHO it would make sense to split certain things into own settings:

eg. Real-time mode could get a toggle to save traffic, while the other features could still work
while there would be no real-time updates (just the normal data transmission, so dashboard/graphs being served from the data stored in the VRM and not directly by the installation) the controls/UI/remote VictronConnect/Firmaware could still be accessible when needed.

Hey @Gregor disabling real time to save traffic is possible:.

There is a setting in VRM to disable real time mode for it.

More info in this slide deck, public - Venus OS 3.50 Release - Google Slides. Especially this slide:

Hi Pattaclop, I’m new here and see it the same way you do. This is certainly not stupid and also corresponds to my idea of data protection. In my opinion, sharing the information and data for the dashboards and graphics has nothing to do with sharing the “Remote Console” via the VRM. Especially as it is not clear to me who else can use the “Remote Console” without my knowledge. I have now set the access to offline and hope others will do the same to emphasize the relevance of the not unjustified demand for an additional “switch”.

Hi both,

The VRM real time data and the remote console (new UI) use exactly the same data feed.

So having a switch to disable Remote console on VRM might feel more private or more secure, but its not.

I’m not sure how I can more clearly explain this.

On the other hand, for full privacy, disabling VRM in its entirety is indeed always the best option.

Best regards, Matthijs

Ps. note that when the VRM portal mode is set to read only in the GX, that that its really read only. The GX itself then refuses any writes/commands/settings changes.

Hi Matthijs, thanks for the quick reply, if I understand correctly “use exactly the same data feed” does not mean that it is the same data. Of course a switch in the VRM to turn off the “Remote Console” is not the right way. I would have liked to see a switch in VenusOS (as before) that would have prevented transmission at the point of origin. As it looks like I will switch back to 3.42, which gives me a better feeling and has worked well so far (nice GUI or not).
