Orion XS 24V-->12V power supply current

I am looking at moving to a 24V battery on our boat. For this to work I’ll still need to supply the 12V side. I am planning on using two Orion XS so I should have 100A on 12V. (My windlass breaker is 100A.. still need to measure the actual current)

  • What does the temperature derating look like when they are operated in a 40C. The data sheet says (derating 1.5% per °C above 40 °C) - is that the environmental temperature or it’s temperature?
  • What happens when you try to draw more than 50A on a single Orion XS?

Don’t expect the 2 orions to be able to power an anchor winch. Start up current under load will be very high. This winch should have at least a small battery close to the winch.

Hummm hadn’t thought of the inrush, nor locked current :frowning:
I guess I’ll need a battery on the 12V side :frowning:

Still have the same general question thou :

  • What does the temperature derating look like when they are operated in a 40C. The data sheet says (derating 1.5% per °C above 40 °C) - is that the environmental temperature or it’s temperature?

  • What happens when you try to draw more than 50A on a single Orion XS?

40C is the ambient operating temp.
If you try to draw more than 50A, the output voltage will collapse. Depending on the internal protection circuitry, this will either give 50A constant current, or when the output voltage drops below a certain voltage it will turn off until the overload is removed or the unit reset.

Thanks!
