Orion 24/12 limiting current output

I have had a failure with my 50amp 24v engine driven alternator. mechanic suggest I limit the output to my Victron batteries via my Victron Orion 24/12 30 amp dc/dc charger. It doesn’t look as though I can limit current output, just the amount of time in ‘Bulk’ and ‘Absorption’. Can an alternator run at 60% output happily for 2 hours? (28 amps{bulk} from a 50 amp alternator)?

It delivers 12 30A, but on the primary side you have 24v with a maximun of maybe 18A.

So, don’t worry.

Sweet!..thanks so much!..I’ll ‘clamp’ the output with a dc amp meter after I’ve installed the new alt, plus I’ve bought (yet to install) a smart shunt for the 24 volt side…Sorry to take up any more of your time, but I’ve been researching on how does the Orion ‘TR’ control what the input is to the start battery? Or is that left entirely up the the alt regulator?

Thanks ‘Ludo’, I’ve read it front to back, and can at this time only believe that’s as we say ‘white mans magic’…I’ve wired it up as directed with a ‘small BMS’ and it all works fine. It’s only due to this recent failure of the alt that had me thinking about how does the Orion keep the 24v starter battery happy, while pumping out plenty of amps to the Life4po’s?..Thanks for your tip on secondary tap if you like. Once I install the smart shunt on the 24v side, I’ll be able to see more clearly what and when things are happening…thanks again!
