Fitting out my boat with 2 x 200ah Lithium batteries

Okay I recently purchased 2 x 200ah lithium batteries to replace my old agm house batteries.

This boat is a 2012 model and would appear nothing would support a lithium setup.
The boat batteries are currently charged up from the alternator when operating. The alternator is a Mitsubishi 12v115A. Additionally the boat batteries can be charged by means of 240v when stopped at a marina and connected to power.

I will eventually be adding a few solar panels to assist with battery charging. So many products I’m confused.

The current charge management system is a Quick SBC251.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

solution depends on what exact model of battery you have.
In general, due to LI batteries disconnecting at high cell voltages, a lead battery is still needed to protect the alternator (and often to start the engine). Charging the Li batteries can be done by ACR, or by dc/dc converter, depending on voltage compatibility. For mains charging, then the same applies - or a charger that is lithium compatible.

Thanks Mike,
It use to be so simple with lead batteries.
I have left the start battery as a lead battery, it’s only the house batteries I’m am changing over to LI. Charging from the alternator is not to much of an issue as I would just get a DcDc charger, the issue is when you plug up to 240v shore power when you stop at a marina. I’m actually most confused about the Quick SBC 251 charger on it now. Anyway I’m sure I will sort it out eventually.
Thanks heaps

Scott

manual for the charger.
It does not say compatible with lithium batteries. However, the gel Abs voltage is 14.4, if this is compatible with your LI batteries, then you could use it. Alternatively you can program it for 14.1V.
Otherwise just use the charger for charging the starter battery, and use the same Dc/Dc converter to charge the house bank.
However, I would fit a MultiplusII inverter charger, and carefully program that to charge the house battery. Also think about making the house bank 24V. (due to smaller cable sizes and much better efficiency))

Correct I don’t believe it would be compatible with LI. I looked at the multiplusII inverter and think this is the way to go. Hadn’t thought about the 24v option but certainly something to consider.

You may wish to look at the BankManager BankManager – Marine DC AC which is designed for your situation. It also considers MikeD’s useful comment.
