Blue Smart IP22 charger gets hot when charging

Hello.

I’ve had my charger for a few years now and it has always gotten what I consider too warm.

There is a fan inside and a setting for ‘night mode’ to disable the fan but I’ve never noticed a difference in that when not in that mode the fan doesn’t seem to move any air and the unit gets warm.

I’m running it now for 2 hours at 30amp output and the casing at it’s warmest point is 136 degrees F (58 C).

Nothing bad ever happens and it never lowers the output current but is this operating correctly? I assumed the fan would kick on at some point but I’ve never heard it.

Thanks,

Will

It’s a tiny fan, nearly impossible to hear unless something’s actually wrong with the fan like a worn bearing or something - I sort of always assumed the night mode was more to prevent NVH from the slight vibration the fan can cause, though then again some people have these mounted directly underneath or beside their beds, so I suppose in that case the very slight noise the fan can make could potentially disturb someone’s sleep.

The unit’s case is the heatsink, so while the unit will technically start derating at ~104F, that’s as measured on the PCBA, not on the case; the case can -and should- get considerably more hot than the internals, if the heat management design is functioning properly.

Good to know and thanks
