Adding a fourth PylonTech L1 Battery - Battery Module Status LED's ( 8 ) all Orange

I purchased PylonTech L1 3.55Kwh Li Battery as an addition to an existing string. This addition would raise the capacity up to 14.20 Kwh from 10.65 Kwh ( from 222 Amps to 296 Amps ). Generated over 930Kwh excess back to the Grid over the past year but the supplier gives virtually no kudos, hence the additional battery.

The 3 x PylonTech L1 Batteries were installed around Feb 2023. Connected to a Victron Multiplus II 48 | 5000 | 70 Amp Inverter. Fed by 8 x 460 Watt Panels through 2 x Victron 150 | 45 amp MPPT Smart Controllers with comms through a Cerbo GX. Panels are wired in two sets of 4 panels in a series / parallel combination.

With the new L1 Battery installed, the Multiplus II trips-out on Low Battery ( BMS 512 Internal Failure ). Recorded Battery voltage with multimeter with 4 x L1 connected = 52.4vdc. Battery voltage with 3 x L1 connected = 50.12 Vdc.

Observed that Battery Module Status Indicators / LED’s ( x 8 ) were all Orange.

Setup returned to 3 x L1 Battery String setup and running normally.

I have consulted with the Battery Supplier ( Autosolar ) but still waiting on a response

I believe cell imbalance might be preventing the BMS Relays closing and / or specific settings may be disabling the Inverter ; the Absoption, Float and Equalization Voltages are all set to 51.80vdc on both MPPT Smart Controllers. Thias does not makes sense. I read online that Absorption should be around 52.0V and the float to 51.0V. but never above 52.4v.

Just not sure how critical these settings are. It appears that the new L1 Battery might be overcharged and @ 52.4V, therefore preventing the BMS Relays to activate.

Battery capacity has been updated to 296A, using a MK3 USB Adaptor connected into the Inverter V.E. Bus Port ( Cerbo GX RJ45 Cable unplugged ), using VE Configure 3 File.

On a wing and a prayer !

@KeniCook Some quick pointers. Ensure the newest battery is installed as the master. The battery should preferably be fully charged off-line prior to installing it, although I have seen many instances where it did not matter as the bank wil sort itself out once connected. Don’t set any dip switches and keep them as per shipped. Make sure the absorbtion is set to 52V and float 51 as per the Victron manual on solar chargers and inverter. It may be necessary to update the firmware on all the batteries, but that is not for the faint hearted and requires a cable, software and firmware best obtained from the supplier or Pylontech support, who may be reluctant to give it out to end-users given the implications if things go wrong. Ensure you follow the correct startup procedure as per the manual. Were one battery taken off-line, the other should still be operating so check the interlinks are connected correctly too as it could be as simple as a cabling issue.

Appreciate your time and feedback. You are spot on with having to fully charge the new battery.

Pylontech Services responded to an request yesterday evening. Response shown below.

I have Force L1 Batteries. Bench Power Supply should arrive later today from Amazon.

I will update you on progress.
