Replying to myself here. After looking at the fusing, the wiring, etc. I will return the 30A unit and ordered the 12|12-18 charger. I wish there was a FAQ in the mix somewhere with what to look out for.
Basically check ALL of the wiring, and don’t trust “spec” and look at fusing, wire sizes, connectors, etc. At least I caught it before the fuses blew or worse, the wiring melted.
Can’t those Orion’s be throttled down (In VictronConnect) to whatever you specify? That way you could throttle it to say 25A, and be charging ~40% faster than with the 18A model.
Also, that way if your tow vehicles changes to something with a higher rating, you can bump up the limit in VictronConnect and be back to full speed.
Not meaning to be combative… ISTR that the “spec” for the +12V on a trailer connector was 40A. Maybe that was on my old RAM 2500 that was built for trailer towing. I made the assumption that it would be the same on my newer vehicles; a lighter duty truck and a medium duty SUV. Both limit the current to 30A, and my trailer has a 10AWG wire from the charge pin, which in reality limits it to 20A or less no matter what the rating.
My bad for assuming that the 40A was universal. It would be nice to have a HOWTO to help people like me do it right the first time.
I wish. I honestly thought that was the case as the Victron 120-12 chargers can be limited. But the 12|12 chargers are all or nothing. Oh well. The Orion XS can be current limited but for much more $. Again, my bad for not doing the research.
