Here in the USA we all use AM/PM and doing math isnt a strong suit - why is there no display option for AM/PM ↔ 24 Hour clock? thats a one sentence LLM prompt in your coding platform…
Perhaps add the Feature Request tag to your post.
Good Idea - Done! thx!
Also, someone needs to look at the selections for time zones and how they work. I selected America/Mountain Std time and it was completely wrong, off by like 6 hours, so I had to set the time manually. Here’s the AI prompt for the programmer: “check and validate all time zone menu settings so they reflect reality and are accurate”
The military may disagree with you.
You’re assuming this is an oversight rather than a deliberate choice to make visualisation of data easier or less ambiguous.
This is a common implementation on numerous management platforms I use, and ones from US companies as that.
Probably something an AI failed to say in its efforts to please.
Also why we don’t permit AI produced content on the forum - it gets it wrong far too often.
Shouldn’t that be “SI” prompt?
Ha! i did forget the Military ![]()
But you’d have to build Mil-Spec gear for them to use…
Mass market would overwhelmingly choose AM/PM
It’s strange that this seems to be the first request for AM/PM, I can’t remember that there was one before.
Victron is a European company and in Europe almost all using the 24h system.
But yes, it shouldn’t be a big problem to implement that in Venus OS and VRM.
It’s still surprising to me that everyday US public uses 12-hour time for some reason… between the military, nautical, air traffic, police, and DOT sectors and most regular governmental agencies in the US… plus the rest of the world in general, of course… all using 24-hour time as a common practice, I’m not surprised that VRM and the Cerbo has 24-hour as a default.
Roughly 150 countries use 24-hour time in all public, private, and governmental sectors; roughly 10 countries use 12-hour time as a default for public life while their militaries and governmental/official sectors use 24-hour.
The US is very much in the minority there, as one of the 10 countries that still use 12-hour time as a default for most public life.
Still, agreed I suppose that having the option should be do-able.
I’m not opposed to using AM/PM, but this American prefers not using AM/PM for systems like this. And in 5+ years of owning my business, I’ve never had one customer ask for it.
This is the primary reason I would not want AM/PM. I suppose Victron could continue logging data using the 24 hours scheme, but display AM/PM on the home screen for people who struggle subtracting 12 ![]()
They are considering it for the next release (v3.90):
It’s the little things in life that keep me happy ![]()
woud you like energy in foot-pounds?
Time format in USA has some logic and everybody around the world will know what you are talking about - I would never use it in writing anyway it is used in casual verbal communication
It is the date format they use is something crazy confusing and illogical.
As I am in the USA I think I would like to cast my own vote instead of relying solely on input from someone that feels qualified to make a generalization on the desires of 330 million people, can tell you how to just quickly program the firmware to give a AM/PM option, self admittedly can not successfully use the built in time zone selection tool in place, prefers the inaccuracy of displays in amps, forgets about an organization of men and women that fight hard to maintain their right to freedoms, and as someone else pointed out struggles with basic math after lunch.
My vote is to put that request all the way at the bottom of the to-do list and when enough community members have such a strong desire/need to view am/pm then the community can figure out through AI how to build a small app that can do the conversion for them. In my opinion, I would think developer time should be allocated to add an option for Installers/dealers to input a graphic and contact information as a window view for end users looking for service or support. It would be even cooler if it would be able to reference data when online via the Users Tab that could be updated if the installer/dealers contact information were to ever change, like updated phone or account manager information.
Another generalisation. I certainly don’t use 24hr clock times. No one I know goes around saying it’s 15:32 etc. they say 3:32. It can be useful in technical situations. But given it’s such a simple option to add, it is difficult to understand why it’s not been added as an option.
