Hello Victron Community,

I want to inquire about the feasibility of integrating an existing off-grid Victron system with a new one through the Microgrid setup.

For Context, the old system (7 kWp + 5 kVA + 15 kWh) consists of 1x 5 kVA Victron Multiplus-II, 1x MPPT RS 450/100 charge controller and 3x Jinko JKS-51100-II batteries. The new system will have 1x 10 kVA Victron Quattro, 1x MPPT RS 450/100 charge controller and 2x DL5.0C Dyness batteries. Both systems will each have their own Cerbo GX.

I would like to know;

  1. If it is possible to connect these two systems via the Victron Microgrid setup
  2. Requirements for setting up such a system (Hardware and Software)
  3. Can this setup be implemented by a technical person with experience in installing Victron systems or it requires additional backend support?

Whats the idea behind using a Quattro? Are you planning to use the second ACin with a genset? This would not work with the microgrid application. While you can use a Quattro in a microgrid, the second ACin has no benefit.

Main points for a microgrid are:

  • All loads on the bus side, no loads on the ACouts
  • Charge sources only on the DC side

Installation and commissioning must only be performed by trained and experienced professionals.

Can be setup by anyone that has access to the inverters and an MK3 adapter, but maybe shouldnt be setup by anyone. At least some victron training would be advisable

So currently, the old system is supplying a school block. The new system (Quattro) is meant to supply a new guesthouse block (bigger load) but the client wants the two systems to share loads. The site is off-grid so there’s only DC power from the solar panels and each system will have its own solar panels, charge controller and batteries.

Couple of catches for now which seem to be tripping people up. There can be no grid and no generator (unless the generator directly charges the battery bank - not ac coupled)

Can all be done without direct support as with any victron installation - with the right know how.
