V3.64 beta over rides V3.70 beta and looses V3.70 beta features

Hi, Just updated GX and it went to Beta V3.64~1, the two Relay button selectors has now gone, and it shows one selector, but the relay screen has gone back to the old style with no names or GUI buttons.

v3.64~1 is older then v3.7

How do you get this beta (v3.70~23) ? I have beta v3.64~2. I click on, ā€œcheck for updatesā€ and it returns ā€œno newer update availableā€
Thanks

You dont currently. v3.70 beta testing was suspended to test v3.64

@njka read the post ,2 above your post which clearly states during V3.64 beta, V3.70 beta will not be available. You will have to wait for V3.64 official release and a return to V3.70 beta.

Ah, Ok got it now lol. Thanks

Correct Sherlock, but for some reason you cannot download 3.70 beta, see below the latest version it shows you is available via beta which is 3.64~2, so something is not sync’d somewhere, either on my side or Victron’s side, I had 3.70~21 and when it updated, the OS went back 3.64~1 ?

.

I Know, but to be honest:

  1. it is beta
  2. don’t install just ā€œblindā€. I saw this in the console as well and did not install, because it is older

Sorry, I didn’t just blindly update.

I was walking past the screen, saw there was an update available and hit update, I was in a hurry to get some stuff ready for work and overlooked the version number as I assumed it was an update to fix the two switch buttons appearing I had notified on here earlier this week that was mentioned it would be fixed..

Then realized later on the unit had downgraded from doing the update, irrespective if it’s Beta or Release version normally one would expect an UPdate is going forward’s not backwards unless it’s a recall.

I searched for old version on the GX but 3.70 was not one of them available, so I thought maybe best to let the guys on here know something is not happy, be it me or somewhere else.

Anyway as with most things these days, their is always someone ā€œsmarterā€ who knows how things work better than someone else, which makes the ones that might want to ask a question hesitate for fear of being ridiculed

Yes, seems to be Iā€˜m smarter, because I realized the lower version number and came to the conclusion, not to install, there might be an issue on Victron site

This isn’t an issue, but rather a normal and communicated procedure from Victron. The beta version always tests what will be released soon. v3.7x contains new features that are being further developed. v3.6x is the current official stable version. If a bug fix is necessary for the stable version, the v3.7x beta series is interrupted and the bug fix for v3.6x is tested. Naturally, the new features of v3.7x are not included there. @mpvader always announces the interruption of the new beta series.

There is always a sticky post at the top of the Venus OS beta thread, a careful and prudent operator will alwsys read that before updating beta firmware in case there is necessary information. However given the number of posts on this, I feel I am in the minority and people just upgrade their power systems blindly.

From the beta sticky thread, my bold.

That kind of qualifies as a blind update…
If you go to ā€œStored backup firmwareā€, you should be able to go back to your previous 3.70beta version.

@BartChampagne No, if you downgrade it does not always keep the newer firmware as back up because that would need forward compatibility.

Several times during V3.60 beta I returned to V3.5x and the V3.60 beta did not appear as backup firmware.

Note, this topic.

Between v3.5x and v3.60 that is true.
The v3.5x firmware can’t recognize the newer v3.60 formatting so you can go from v3.6x back to v3.5x but then you can’t switch back to v3.6x, unless you re-install that version.

Between v3.70~23 and v3.64 you can switch back and forth between those versions - I just did it on the Pi3 I use as VenusOS test system.
It was running v3.70~23, I ā€˜upgraded’ to latest v3.64, then reverted back to v3.70~23 by booting the backup firmware.

Not universal then, thats odd.

Hi Victron-DEV.-Team, Hello everyone,

unfortunately I also fell for the fw 3.64~1!
However, with clearly limited consequences and on vacation … Please save the comments about update & beta versions in general - thanks. I just want to briefly share my experience and solution!

  1. correction options gone! Because the remote console and also the update option under device list were gone! And this in the VRM app, as well as on the VrM webpage!
  2. solution: Login VRM webpage & settings, then replace the url end ā€œSettingā€ with ā€œFirmware-Updateā€! A new beta from 3.7* was ready to update again and everything was nem old!
I also find the simplified interface of 3.64~1 rather unappealing, but what’s worse is that all setting options were gone.
  3. why these regressions are offered again and again (as described here from 3.70 to 3.64~1). Is it not possible to end this? Forwards always, backwards never … except deliberately from a backup.

You can choose the public releases instead :upside_down_face:

Do not have auto updates and read the changelog, and track the sticky posts on here. beta releases is aimed at involved users. I had V3.70 features installed so saw the V3.64 beta and as others have said, decided not to downgrade. It works OK if you take time.
