Can an Orion XS 12/12 be used to charge a Epoch 12V 460Ah lithium house bank directly from a stock Volvo internally regulated alternator?
The Orion XS (of any variant) is a battery-to-battery charger, not an alternator-to-battery charger, so you’ll need a Pb battery on the input side as a buffer. This protects both the alternator as well as the Orion XS. Alternator runs to Pb battery, Pb battery runs to input side of Orion XS.
That’s how we are currently configured. I’m looking for a way to not put 14.5V to the AGM for many hours of motoring.
I should have upgraded to externally regulated alternators, but it’s too late for that, at least this year.
