Our boat is wired as such from the factory:
A Xantrex True Charge 40amp battery charger feeds both the start/bow&stern thruster bank of 3 G31 AGM batteries and a bank of two 4D AGM house batteries. A Blue Sea ACR is between the two banks. A Xantrex 1800W inverter is connected to the house bank. The alternator is connected to the start bank and shore power is two 30amp connectors, although the charger and inverter are connected to one of the 30a feeds. I find it curious that they wired the charger to both banks and have an ACR, but I guess that makes it foolproof.
I’d like to upgrade to Victron equipment as the Xantrex stuff is known to fail at the most inopportune times. I’ve identified a Multiplus 12/2000 inverter and a Phoenix IP43 Smart Charger (12/50-3 or 12/30-1) as likely replacements. I already utilize a Victron BMS and Cerbo GX.
My question is what is the optimal way to utilize the new equipment. It seems to me I have several options:
- Connect the new equipment the same as the old and configure the Multiplus to inverter only and IP43 charger to a max of 40A
- Connect the new equipment the same except disconnect the 2nd charger output from the house bank and allow the Multiplus to charge the house bank. Could then save a few bucks and go with the 30A single output IP43 charger
- Rely upon the ACR to charge the start bank and do away with the IP43 charger altogether
I’d prefer not to do #3 as I want it foolproof (in the case of the ACR switched off AUTO).
Thoughts and advice appreciated!
