I want my main source of power to be from solar /battery storage inverter to supply everything, but should my supply drop I want to automatically transfer to shore line. Can I use a victron auto transfer switch 5kva by instead of 1 input being shore power make it from inverter and the secondary supply being the mains .?
Presumably this is a mobile application not fixed domestic?
The latter would be what ESS is for, for the former, ESS isn’t supported due to safety concerns.
No it is for my home, a house
Ok, then have a read about the ESS assistant and the ESS design guide. There is also a video on training for it on the professional.victronenergy.com site. You didn’t mention your equipment, but multis and quattros support ESS.
This will prioritise battery and solar and cut back to mains when levels are too low.
AGM isn’t a great battery type for typical ESS/PV cycling.
There are also assistants to drop and reconnect grid automatically.
Thank you , Nick , I only use Victron, all my system is victron except solar panels and batteries, I would disagree in part with you as I did an investigation into batteries and there life, a boating mag publish my findings 5 years ago . If you use 6 volt deep cycle AGM’s to bring up to 24 volt, and install victron battery balances they last long than Litham and lead acid also their power drops slow and you will still have good amp’s at 30%
It all depends how you size and cycle them. Like anything, well configured and looked after, it will look after you.
My very first ESS systems were on lead acid batteries, and we did our best to limit their usage, which isn’t always possible with a bad grid.
Even with balancers, I only got 4 years out of them.
But there are battery whisperers here who perform feats that are beyond a lithium pleb like myself.
