SignalK versions are constantly not sufficiently up to date

A major advantage of Venus OS on Ekrano & Cerbo over competitors is that SignalK is included with the large firmware.
Unfortunately, however, the version of SignalK included is generally significantly behind the latest SignalK releases.

To maintain this advantage, please ensure that SignalK is integrated into the Venus OS large firmware at an earlier stage or with a more up-to-date version.

I fully agree SignalK, Node.js, npm, and the other software included in the large FW should be keept up to date.

The new Beta 3.80~21 has just been released, and once again there is no update for SignalK. SK is now already four versions behind: 2.26 would be the current version.

SignalK is now 2.27 (2.22 in Victron)
NodeJS v24 (v20 -EOL - in VictronOS Large)

They are pretty old in VictronOS large image.

That’s right; as of today, the SK in OS Large is already five versions out of date.

Did you guys notice that voting was disabled on this topic? Pretty weird.

I guess if you combine complex hardware and software it’s not always easy (or necessary) to maintain everything up to date.

That’s why some specialised machines are still running at Windows 95, 98, 2000 or XP.

Are the Signal K updates add critical fixes or crucial functions needed in combination with Victron?

The topic was relocated to the modifications section which does not support voting, only some categories have this enabled.

I managed to pass on the request, a version upgrade is being added to the beta todo list. Not likely to be in the next couple of iterations as it is does take some work and there are higher priorities. Keep an eye out on the changelog.

From the conversation I just had, there seems to rarely be new features. The majority are under the cover changes.
Sounds like one of those juice is rarely worth the squeeze moments.

Bug in SK 2.22.1: webshop in rare case never online, so no updates for plugins
Plugins in need of SK > 2.22
Plugins in need of Node.js > v22

To put it nicely, with a wink:
In principle, you’re absolutely right, Matthias. SK and the many plugin developers are just coming up with unnecessary—albeit pretty—bells and whistles  whereas VenusOS focuses on what’s truly important and complex.
In other words, the onboard electrical system works thanks to VenusOS, but you can only sail the yacht to a limited extent because SK and the plugins or functions you need can’t be updated.

Or to put it another way:
When it comes to Node-RED, Victron really does go all out.

Completely, but the effort is proportional to the user-base and broader interest.
This integration has just grown exponentially and it is the gateway to user friendly customisation, especially with virtual devices providing a “quasi-supported” way to get third party devices to play nicely with each other.
Its development does need to closely track venus, and indeed, influence it.

We really see very, very few SK queries popping up, my impression, as far at least as forum stats go, is it is quite niche.
So I can understand the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” philosophy.

Anyway, it will be seeing an update in the near future, which is better than a poke in the eye.

Sounds like, everything going to plan, the next beta might just contain an update :crossed_fingers:t2:

Thank you very much, Nick!
