Redundancy (failover) in off-grid situation

Hi Everyone,

I am in an off-grid scenario and recently my multiplus failed, causing total shutdown of power.

To prevent this in future, can one place two inverters in series, so that if one fails, there is a power continuation without interruption?

Thanks in advance

Yes you can altough unsupported by victron, it has been done before

But if the one supplying the loads fails youre still without power…

I would use a bigger unit to feed a smaller and the smaller feeding the loads

so you have to be 50% lucky, in that the one failing, has to be the one NOT providing power.

I wonder if Victron will introduce a fully seamless failover transition, not requiring human presence to physically switch-over

There are quite a few existing topics on this subject already. The RS inverter only series does this already but not the grid attached model.
It is more complicated than it sounds so not a simple software update.

ok thanks, I will look into the RS model and research that

I’m using one MP2 feeding an inexpensive automatic transfer switch (Geya G2R-63) intended to be used with a generator.

The other ATS input is the grid but could just as easily be any other source of power.

The idea is to maintain power to critical loads if the MP2 switches off and therefore fails to pass through grid power.

Run two inverters to something like a filax 2?

But he can connect two in parallel, which should prevent interruption, isn’t it?

A true parallel and/or 3 phase systems will completely shutdown in case on an error in any of the installed inverters.

If you think to a system with 2 MP-II working independently, it is possible with the help of an automatic transfer switch, but still, the two inverters will have to work continouosly and therefore prone to defects.

Two inverters working continuously is acceptable. The chances of both failing simultaneously are minimal.

Is there a Victron-approved automatic transfer switch method?

Plenty of ATS ready-made boxes available or, if you prefer, specialized modules and put it together with a pair of contactors.

All modules have a generator remote start signal that could be used to effectively start the second MP-II.

To my knowledge, if you also want VRM monitoring for this particular usage, you will need 2 individual GX devices, whether built into MP-II or external.
