NEW: Use an Android tablet as dedicated GX Wi-Fi Display (beta)

Works awesome. Added Cerbo GX and this remote option using a 2019 Samsung Tab A 8-inch screen.

Mounted in my Airstream in a way where centrally located for visibility and easy access and if I want to remove it for portabilty use, I just take it off the wall (used Command Strips) and unplug the charger port. I installed a 12v to 5v USB converter and wired up so wiring all hidden and made the connections behind my microwave oven draw. Been using primarily with the LAN connection so dont always need wifi to have access to the display when traveling.

Great job Victron. This is bad ass for RV applications where you avoid having to drill into the cabinetry and also negate running more electrical wires to have a display.

I had the same problem
Activate the 3-button control in Android, then it works

Updated 2 devices to beta6…

Both devices can no longer be switched off using the button on the device, are always on.

Any solution or idea?

Make sure screen always on is unticked in the menu settings of the Cerbo app and if so then go to the Android screen setting display and set screen sleep to what you want. It should go to sleep and rewake when you touch the screen again. Works on mine and tried 30 second and 5 minute sleep and worked well. I leave my display on all the time because when goes to sleep and rewakes it goes theough the app reconnection process to Cerbo for a few seconds. Rather leave the display on all the time rather than it having to do that everytime I approach it to check something out.

I tried a little more…
Pressing the volume up + volume down + power buttons at the same time switches both my phones off

Hi,
The latest beta, when installed via the QR code, blocks the power-off menu that appears when you press and hold the power button. On some models, that menu also includes an emergency call button and other options.

Powering off is still possible — you just need to hold the button down for a bit longer, and the device will turn off.

Thanks to you and everyone who worked on the project!

A wireless display is exactly what has been missing so far. Ideal for applications where the GX device is too far away for an HDMI cable but Wifi is available. Or if you simply want to control or program while sitting on the couch

If I can already make a wish for Christmas, then I would like to have a similar application for devices in the VE.Smart Network based on Bluetooth for smaller systems such as in small motorhomes, leisure boats, etc. where a GX device simply does not fit, but you would like to have a display with values like a GX device without a lot of cabling effort.

Hi, Installed on 2 Tab A Android 7.1 in kiok mode and ā€œapp modeā€ both are OK.
With the kiok mode was a bit difficult to retrieve som stability, perhars due to some internet connection trouble, and router too, it is now OK.

Only he fact that the app screen is doing a 180 degre rotation in I what to keep the usb connecteor on my left.

I will work a bit more to double check again…

Xavier.

Hi, if you enable auto rotation on the hidden menu it should allow you to install the tablet in any orientation.

Hi,
it’s ON and ok when the app is running.
But If I open the settings e.g.: Wifi , the screen do a 180° rotation :upside_down_face:

Xavier

That is a manufacturer limitation on allowed/recommended orientations. The GX app uses a mode that ignores it and allows the user to use any orientation.

OK,

if I open android settings this ok, the orientation do not change.
But if with GX app wifi setting yes… it rotate.
Wit hthe Beta5 this trouble was not present ! (just for the records)

Xavier

Interesting, we will check it. Thank you.

Hello, just for the record I installed on a Lenovo M8 4th Gen
everything went as advertised via the QR code
I also have a thin white line in landscape on the right side almost like the GUI is not wide enough for the display, when I rotate the tablet to vertical no white line is visible

Nice tool, faster than using Fully Kiosk!

But, I can’t get v1.00beta6 to load from the QR code

beta4 worked with QR code

beta6 keeps getting stuck with ā€œCan’t set up deviceā€

I’ve Factory reset from beta4 which didn’t work, then allowed android to load and factory reset from their, but still no luck.

Android 14

This cheap tablet: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0D41MW4SW?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

I did manage to download with the direct link from the QR: https://updates.victronenergy.com/feeds/android-gx-display/gx-android-display.apk and it was simple to install following prompts to allow access rights, and so far works that way.

Is there not anyone else with this problem. I’m still looking for solution. Help.

We haven’t been able to reproduce this issue. It looks like a bug in the tablet’s hardware or software. In the video, you can see the image getting corrupted before it eventually crashes.

What you can try is installing Firefox web browser, and open https://YOURGXIP/gui-v2. Then, check whether it works or not.

Same result except can’t access menu.

I bought a cheap kids tablet running android 10 but when i do a factory reset, it reboots back to the original wall paper screen with all apps and icons, not to the ā€œhelloā€ screen, and tapping 6 times does nothing. Any suggestions?
Also would an Amazon fire tablet work?

Most probable cause is that the tablet not be compatible with the QR method. You can install the apk directly, the limitations of this installation method is that kiosk mode can’t block notifications and others, also auto updates won’t work. Other than that, will work fine.
