I connected and commissioned a MultiPlus II 48-3000 GX over the weekend. Here are a few details about the setup to start with:
1x MPPT 100/20 charge controller with Bluetooth in the VE.Smart network with the second charge controller; connection to the Victron MultiPlus II GX via VE.Direct is still pending
1x MPPT 150/35 charge controller
Shelly Pro EM3 for measuring consumption
Felicity 10 kWh LiFePO₄ battery
Now for the problems/issues I’ve noticed: The data from the Shelly is updated in the Victron GUI, but the control system is not adjusted accordingly. According to the GUI overview, 48 W is being drawn from the battery, but only 18 W is shown as the AC load. The Shelly continues to draw power from the grid (>100 W) instead of having it balanced by the MultiPlus.
2. When I set the MultiPlus to level II and set the maximum charging current to 0 A and the maximum charging voltage to 49 V under charge control, the battery is still charged (battery voltage >54 V).
Who programmed the MultiPlus or configured the settings?
Was it connected as an ESS by an electrician, or was it all DIY?
Is the battery connected to the MultiPlus via a data cable?
DIY project. The reason is that it started out gradually. First as a plug-in balcony solar system, then I added a battery and control via openDTU on battery (i.e. using the existing Hoymiles inverter), and now I wanted to put it on a more “proper” footing. I know, not the best approach/solution, but that’s how it evolved over time. An electrician probably wouldn’t have done anything with it (other than replacing everything).
I’ll connect the battery to the Multiplus via CAN as well. Initially, I intended to control it solely via the battery voltage.
So you programmed the MultiPlus yourself, or configured the settings yourself?
Connect the battery properly to the MultiPlus via CAN. Only switch it on once everything is connected and configured. Don’t just wire something up to see what happens.
Operating without a BMS is not recommended. LiFePO4 is sensitive to overvoltages. You’d have to configure it extremely conservatively to prevent anything from being damaged.
Check out the Victron software VE connect and VEconfig3
There you will find lots of configuration settings associated with your grid connection and battery type / charge voltages.
It’s important to make those settings before running the system - especially before charging your batteries. In my experience, MP2 are shipped with lead acid battery configuration voltage defaults which are too high for Lithium batteries.
davon hat David Woolley spoken about that.
It’s just an example image!
that’s where you tell the Multiplus what it should do and what’s connected to it
I’ve ordered the MK3 cable, and it’s arriving tomorrow. I’ll then carry out the configuration. Are you sure that the MP won’t feed into the grid without the configuration, particularly the Grid setting?
