Is it normal for my Orion tr smart dc- dc charger ( isolated ) to be very hot to the touch?? Will it cool down when not driving. It is well ventilate with no obstruction.
These chargers do heat up quite a bit as part of their normal operation, especially when operating at the higher end of their output. It is very important that it is installed vertically and with the proper space around it to allow it to passively cool properly. Enclosed in a small compartment and installed near other electronics that generate heat are other factors that will cause it to heat up. Keep in mind that the hotter it gets the lower the charge efficiency. The newer XS models operate more efficiently and don’t heat up as much.
You might consider adding an electric fan into the compartment.
Thank you so much … My unit is quite small and was professionally installed i just never realized until today how hot it got …have had it two years
. I think I might just put a small fan there thanks again
