Electrical Refit

The electrical system on my sons boat is somewhat lacking.

Previous owner had shore power so the Batteries, Alternators and basically everything not mains was in a bad state. (The mains wiring on board was not great either)

We are re-doing the lot this spring.

Basic circuit below. Please feel free to comment as I’ve a decent electronic background, but not much experience in this stuff.

Just researching the BMS and Cerbo systems plus starting to select sources, so any experience welcome.

Thanks in advance

Ian

That looks great. I guess it goes without saying that with your electrical background you understand proper fusing and cable sizes. I would recommend looking into the Lynx products for a nice clean installation. Are you planning on using a GX Touch with the Cerbo? You may want to look at the Ekrano too. It will be the GX device and the touch screen in one and can minimize cables. Pretty nice. What batteries are you planning on using?

For the starter alternator, it is usually a good idea to connect the alternator directly to the starting battery via its own isolation switch in an out-of-the-way location. That way if someone turns off the engine battery switch while the engine is running you don’t get a spike from the alternator that blows its diodes. The fuse for the alternator should be close to the battery.

What batteries are you planning on using?

Thanks TherealKT:

Current thinking is either Fogstar or Renology (300AH, With heater, 1 to start with but provision for a max of 2)

Still researching but the cost of the Victrons ones are hard to justify.

The fuse for the alternator should be close to the battery.

Thanks JimHar, I deliberately didn’t do that as the starter current peak is going to be massive (200 - 300A?), not sure how to rate that

The current setup doesn’t have a fuse in there at all. I put it there to protect the Alternator.

Good comment about the Isolator switch position :+1:
