Connecting a SmartShunt directly to a Lynx Distributor

Hi everyone,

I want to connect a SmartShunt directly to a Lynx Distributor, but the bolt on the SmartShunt is too short for the connection.

I understand that I need an M10x20 bolt, but I’m not sure which material or type of metal would be recommended for this application.

Would a brass bolt be suitable, or would another material such as bronze be preferable?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Why not a Lynx shunt, then?

I have used brass bolts when I needed longer ones.

At 109.- compared with 389.- for the Lynx Shunt, the saving is significant.

Yes, that’s what I was thinking of doing too, but I read that mechanically speaking, it wasn’t ideal.

Lynx shunt is nice and seamless if you have cerbo and other ve.can sccs.

However after running one for a while the downsides versus a smartshunt also need to be understood, may not apply to many.

  1. DC loads are no longer tracked as consumption in VRM
  2. Loses track of SOC if power bus is depowered.
  3. Seems to have more failures than smartshunt? (Perhaps anecdotal)

And the price tag is also much higher…

The Lynx Shunt is not accurate and does not properly show consumption. Aside from it connecting seamlessly to the rest of the Lynx products, it has no other value. If it’s for part-time RV use where you can recharge the batteries to 100% often then it’s ok. Otherwise, stick with the SmartShunt or BMV if you want accuracy and proper accounting for energy consumption.

It can be done, but in the Lynx system, the LynX Distributor runs on the Lynx Shunt at 5V via a special cable (RJ10), so you also need a small DC-DC converter from 48V to 5V to power it.
