Hi, folks!

This is my system:

- Victron Smartsolar 100/30 MPPT
- 2x400W solar panels
- 2x190Ah 12v batteries in series
- 1x2000WRMS Pure Sine Wave converter

Obviously I need to balance my batteries with this setup.

I’ve looked at the Victron Battery balancer, and I have a few questions about it.

1. It will at most balance with 1A current between the batteries, and only when the solar panels are charging the batteries. Is 1A really enough for such large batteries? In 1 day it could at best balance around 10 amps between them (5% of rated battery capacity).

2. Is it any way to make it balance when not charging? I would rather have it start to balance when the voltage between them pass a certain difference, for instance 0,2v.

3. Are there any better options for me than the Victron Battery Balancer?

Not sure if this helps I have four 135ah lifepo4 batteries at 12v running in series parallel to give me 24v. I use a Victron battery balancer and it has been installed for3 years now. It appears that it only works when charging either by solar, Shore charger, or dcdc charger.
Sorry I should have said that prior to installing I was having issues with one of my batteries being undercharged

You can parallel them.

How many you need does depend on how fast you charge and how different they are in internal resistance.
It is always best to top balance not balance all the way through the voltages.

I can’t parallell them, I need 24 volts 🙃

Yes you can connect 2 to the same bank.
And yes, on a 24v system. I have done it.
It literally says you can [on the product page](https://www.victronenergy.com/batteries/battery-balancer#manual).
The shunt also has midpoint monitoring, so you can monitor it.

Can you explain how wired in the Victron balancer with your Lifepo4 batteries? In the manual it shows a midpoint connection but I read that binding the two midpoints together between the two series connected batteries can be dangerous. I suspect the diagram in the manual is of AGM batteries. I would be very interested in what your wiring looks like since it seems to have stood the test of time. Thanks.

The battery chemistry doesnt influence how its supposed to be connected. Just put two batteries in series, and connect the balancer as shown in the manual

I think the concern wasn’t the chemistry but the BMS. According to a contributor on the Victron Energy forum, “that is very dangerous with lithium. never lock midpoints on lithium…if one bms disconnects in the pair there is compounded current placed on the remaining battery , also these balancers are not intended for lithium, some have used them to success and others have not.” Thoughts?
