3-Phase MP 5000 / 28 kWh Pylontech / 16 kWp Solar (8 DC, 8 AC)

Hey everyone,

to give this new showroom a bit of live, i’d like to show you guys my system.

Core-Components:

  • 3x Multiplus 5000/48
  • MPPT 250 | 70 with 3200 Watts Solar 0°
  • MPPT 250 | 80 with 4800 Watts Solar 0°
  • Fronius Symo 12.500 with 8000 Watts Solar, 30° South.
  • Fronius Wattpilot for Solar-Overhead-EV-Charging
  • 8x Pylontech US3000C

Victron-Wall:
Heres a overall picture of what I call the “Victron-Wall” :stuck_out_tongue:

DC-Box:
The DC-Busbar is made out of 10x20mm Pure-Copper material, featuring a total of 12 possible Connections. Bars are designed asymmetric so with alternating +/- everything can be connected nearly straight, matching the usually width of a 2 TE Breaker. (However, at the End 1.5TE Breakers, only positive end have been used)

MPTTs and Multiplus are each connected with exactly 1.8m of 35mm², Batteries are connected as 4x2 with 25mm² cabling.

Each cable is equiped with a 1-Wire DS18B20 to monitor temperatures 24/7. MPPTs got some extra cooling fans, and the whole “DC-Box” is controlled by a wemos d1 mini, sending all values to my local mqtt and controlling fans as required.

The Batteries
8x Pylontech US3000C, 28 kWh capacity, connected as 4x2, have been equiped with a 4mm Child-Protection-Window (you can find and print the holders here: Pylontech US2000/3000/5000 Bracket Child-Protection-Window-Holder by dognose - Thingiverse) - not to protect the child from voltage, but to protect all the buttons and switches from the child :stuck_out_tongue:

Solar
Solar is a total of 16 kWp, All Panels made in Germany (Heckert Solar & SolarWatt) arranged as 8 kWp with a 0° angle (You can walk on these, full glas/glas) and 8 kWp 35° South on the upper roof as well as 5 Solar-Thermic Collectors for hot water.

No Sun…
… no problem. 2 years ago I decided to build a 2kw Windturbine on my lawn. Well, the expactation on the turbine was more like 500 Watts to extend battery runtime during night - and yeah, that’s about what is possible at best at our local wind-conditions.

Finally
I’m a professional Software-Engineer with background in electrical engineering, needless to say that everything in my home that is somehow related to electricity is controlled through my (self developed) home-IT System, which’s data content meanwhile is consuming a 8k resolution full screen in my office (but also fully mobile capable ofc.)

The energy flow is just a super cool visualization, scaling in real time. So messmerizing, I could watch tiny energy bubbles float around for hours :smiley:

I’ve even written an “Extension” for VenusOS that fixes some flaws and also adds major functionality like a central Solar-Overhead distributor to orchestrate all consumers - which I will make available on github during the next weeks. :wink:

Yeah, there have been a few hours of exceling with the layout and “to-scale images” to make sure every wire required can be properly laid with regards to “equal length” constraints etc.

Finally, took some days to get everything nice and tidy, but the result is worth it.

It is damn hard to resist the wish to make a “not ideal workaround” in order to get it running asap - but since I target to run the installation for quite a bunch of years, I resisted, ordered the proper parts or tools, when missing and even refactored stuff that was already done, because during “breaks” I had an idea “that would be better than the current solution” :stuck_out_tongue:

Beautiful, I just want to expand the wind turbines. Can you tell me in more detail how you connected the wind turbine?

The windturbine is - unfortunately - not (physically) connected to the system.

It is charging a dedicated battery, only reponsible for powering some Gardenlights, lawn mower, a water feature etc.

This is due to German regulations, wind energy and solar energy have different pricings for feed-in, so grid-connecting the wind turbine would require to setup a dedicated feed-in measurement and stuff - which has additional yearly fees and after all is more expensive than the yield to be expected from it.

But ofc, by powering stuff within it’s own micro-grid, it takes away “that load” from the mainsystem.

I understand. I’m not from Germany. I wanted to connect the wind turbine to a 24V gel battery and connect the DC/DC converter Orion-Tr 24/48-8.5A to this battery. Connect the converter to the lynx DC bus to the battery pylons. Switch on the converter via remote only when there is no production from the sun and when the pylontech battery is low. But I don’t know if this is a good way?

I also thought I could one of the three Multiplus II. for Quattro II. I don’t know if they would talk to each other correctly in a three phase connection… I wanted to use the second AC input on the Quattro for a wind turbine…

It highly depends on the turbine itself in the first place.

Mine is rated 48VAC, but that means (in the wind turbine world) that it’s operational voltage will range upto 120VAC regularly, with no real limit to the top (as there is no hard limit on rpm for turbines)

Also Windturbines can’t be operated with regular MPPTs, as the tracking itself would have a physical braking impact on the turbine.

There are dedicated inverters for wind turbines that can be configured to match the windturbines voltage / current curve to make sure, rpm can be kept at optimum to produce energy. Asking for too much energy for the given wind speed will just cause the turbine to break and stop.

Asking for to low energy will cause the turbine to run away, until its voltage exceeds the inverters input, and a dump-load is connected in order to forcefully slow down the turbine.

Configuration of that settings is a full-season trial-and-error job, as the official specifications of the manufacturers are usually overpromising what is possible.

Thats not possible! You can only connect the same type multiplus or quattro in 3phase or parallel

I know this is a Victron Energy forum, but I noticed that you have used a ballasted PV panels mounting system ( in picture roof 2 ) May I be very cheeky and ask which system you have used as I am in a similar position that I wish to fit PV panels to a flat roof that I cannot penetrate?

Yes, purpose is exactly to not penetrate the roof.

That part has been done by professionals, including weight calculations based on expected Wind, Panelangle and stuff.

Lasting since 5 years without moving a single mm and we have had winds up to 120 km/h last year.

Nowadays, I would do a East/West system, the solar-curve-characteristic would be a bit of a better match for private consumption i’d say.

(More pv in the morning / evening, less excess feedin during noon)
