USB Wifi on Venus OS on RPi

Hi,

I've bought and Edimax AC600 EW-7811UTC dual band USB WiFi adapter for my RPi 3B+ in the hope of improving it's wireless range.

It appears that Venos OS does not recognise this adapter.

I found a lot of old posts with people asking for Victron to update the list of supported adapters as a lot are no longer available.

The Edimax adapters, amongst others, are very popular in the RPi community; so there is plenty of support out there on Raspian, etc.

Has anyone has any luck getting or other similar models working?

I'm on VOS v2.89

Thanks in advance....

Ben.

A bit more research and I found this EXCELLENT source of info on USB WiFi adapters.

https://github.com/morrownr/USB-WiFi

There are detailed reviews on many, but the core info to take note of is the chipsets that are natively supported in Linux.

Also, there is a shortlist of adapters that 'just work'.

https://github.com/morrownr/USB-WiFi/blob/main/home/The_Short_List.md

There is also detailed info on chipsets that are not natively supported, but can be made work with drivers.

I haven't had a chance yet to try the drivers for the RTL8812AU chipset yet, If it doesn't work, I'll be buying an Alfa AWUS036ACHM as it has very long range capabilities. We aren't chasing high speed throughput on these devices - just reliable WiFi with decent range.

Good, go testing, if there is a no buggy, no obscure, no out of tree, no weird board firmware dependencies available but one that just always works, let us know. Otherwise, please get a tested one , or you are on your own ;)

There are a few older dongles that work out of the box, but most newer chips don't , despite they claim to be linux supported / Pi supported. They require a recompile of the kernel and the whole toolchain for this. Not available on the VenusOS, as there is no apt to install all this stuff. Most drivers are proprieatary and not open source, so they would likely not be supported out of the box in the future as well without compiling from source.

You can use mini-usb powered router and the LAN port to create additional WiFi networks or use one of the supported ancient dongles.

The EW-8711UTC uses the Realtek RTL8812AU chipset.

This is a very commonly used chipset, like RTL8188; which I believe is supported in Venus OS?

A bit more searching and I came across this thread referring to updating the RTL8188 firmware with opkg when required after and update to Venus OS caused an already working USB WiFi adapter to stop working:

https://community.victronenergy.com/comments/145069/view.html

I use OPKG to load python3 to allow usage of 1-wire temperature sensors.

That lead me to find the OpenWRT source site, which has a searchable database on available packages:

https://openwrt.org/packages/table/start

A search revealed there is an RTL8812 kernel driver available to install, so I'll give that a go tonight and post my results.

Regardless, it would be great if Victron could add more of these very commonly used chipsets into the image as it would significantly improve the support of easily and readily available USB WiFi adapters.

As @JohannDo alluded to, the existing 'supported' adapters are ancient.

@benc_ipind The RPI VenusOS image has a fairly generic kernel, so any standard well supported USB WIFI adapter shock work. This is the list of WIFI drivers that are available.

Thanks for that.

Unfortunately, the RTL8812 drivers aren't there and it's due to Realtek (for whatever reason) not complying buy building mac80211 technology drivers; which are the required standard for inclusion in Linux kernels.

I have found some articles on how to build drivers like this one:

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/AC1200_Wireless_Adapters

But it brings more issues, like having to uninstall and reinstall the drivers every time a kernel update happens. :(

So, long story short; I'm going to move to one of the supported Mediatek chipset based adapters (mt76 series) as they are pretty much universally supported by all flavours of UNIX/Linux.

I hope others users see this and it helps them before they go down the rabbit hole I have. I know there are some others that have done the same or similar without getting to the bottom of it.

I saw one user bought 4 different adapters and never worked out the issue. Researching what he had bought, they all had the same (unsupported) chipset.
