Orion Alternator over-voltage protection

On my catamaran with two alternators, I just had both Orion dc-dc chargers be “burned out” by one of the alternators running unregulated to a high voltage (like ~50vdc). This is per the distributor who installed them. What is the actual overvoltage protection for the Orion? Can they actually be “burned out” by overvoltage? This seems to be an unlikely explanation….

The allowable input voltages are model dependant, are given in the downloadable manuals. But without the model I couldn't check, sorry.
